Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth attended the school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. But she only stayed in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose was filled with difficulties. When she was offered a job as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to find opportunities in the stage. She then worked as an hat-checker at a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There, she made enough money as an usherette during the day while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
